The Evolution of ARC Raiders EP2: The Life of a Raider

Hello Raiders,

Last week, we brought you episode one of our series on The Evolution of ARC Raiders. Our first part dove into the early days of development, the initial sketches and mechanics, and the tough realization that version one of ARC Raiders simply wasn’t fun enough.

What happened then? The team still believed in the world they had created, but some radical changes were needed. By pivoting to include a PVP element, the game developed an entirely new personality: gameplay centred around exploration, tactical decision-making, and uncertain alliances between players in the face of a more powerful ARC threat. 

In episode 2 of our series, the team explores how the final version of ARC Raiders was assembled. You’ll hear about:

  • Level design: Which of the original maps still worked and what needed to be changed to fit a radically altered gameplay loop?
  • Sound design: Why was vivid and realistic sound design a priority for ARC Raiders and how was it achieved? 
  • Finding an identity: How did ARC Raiders use certain gameplay mechanics to carve out a space as an accessible extraction shooter?
